Combining R&B, jazz and pop sounds this nine-time Grammy Award-winner is an unstoppable force in music. Fans were touched by her “Unforgettable” duet with father Nat “King” Cole on 1991’s “Unforgettable…With Love,” and were equally enthralled by her 2008 release, “Still Unforgettable,” and 2009’s “Let’s Talk About Love.” It all takes place at Northstar-At-TahoeTM Resort mid-mountain in a gently sloping bowl and overlooking a breathtaking view of mountains and valley below.
Backed by a 13-piece big band, Cole’s silky vocals are set to fill the mountain air with hits she’s recorded from the American Songbook along with so many of her own songs. She strives for a beauty and mystique in the songs she performs and also for, as she says, “lyrics and melodies that touch you and soothe you, appealing to your intellectual side, but most of all, appealing to your heart.”
With 24 albums under her belt and more than three decades in music’s limelight Cole has appealed to many people’s hearts. Elegant, sophisticated and often times nostalgic, her music is powered by vocal dexterity and an intimate and knowing way with lyrics and melody. Her versatility has led to a diverse list of No. 1 hits including “Inseparable,” “Our Love,” “I’ve Got Love On My Mind,” “Pink Cadillac” and “Miss You Like Crazy,” just to name a few.

The festival’s summer concert series goes out with a dose of blue-eyed soul thanks to Michael McDonald performing August 7 at Northstar-At-Tahoe Resort. Honing his signature style while playing with the Doobie Brothers, McDonald’s laid-back California-style pop and rock is instantly recognizable and has won him a legion of adoring fans. Of course, hits like “I Keep Forgettin’,” the Number One pop single “On My Own” and Grammy Award-winning “Yah Mo B There” have surely created a number fans as well.
A fixture in American pop music for more than three decades, McDonald emerged from his hometown of St. Louis as part of Steely Dan’s touring band in the 1970s, then joined the Doobie Brothers where his voice became the group’s focal point. He contributed to such hits as “Takin’ It to the Streets,” “Minute by Minute” and “What a Fool Believes” which won the 1980 Grammy as Song of the Year.
McDonald’s most recent album, 2008’s “Soul Speak,” takes the singer down a new path exploring songs he’s loved, regardless of genre. Selections include “For Once in My Life” and “Walk On By” along with Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic.”
“You just try to pick the songs that are most meaningful to you,” McDonald says of the “Soul Speak.” “These songs span my life—they’re the ones where I can remember where I was when I first heard them, the ones that made me interested in becoming a recording artist, the songs I’d always imagined myself singing.”
